Before me R. A. Shivers, County Judge of Tyler County, State of Texas, on this day personally appeared T. J. Griffin, who are personally known to me to be credible citizens, who, being by me duly sworn, on Those state that they personally know, J. D. Collier the above named applicant for a pension and that they Personally know that he said J.D. Collier has been a bona fide citizen of the State of Texas since prior to January 1, 1880 and that they have no interest in this claim.

          I, T. J. Sturrock, state and county assessor in the County of Tyler, State of Texas, do certify that J.D. Collier or his wife, or his trustee, or trustee for his wife, whose name assigned to the foregoing application for a pension, under the act of the 31st legislature, approved March 26, 1909, is charged on the land and personal property rolls of said County with estate, real, personal and mixed, at the assessed value of $350.  Given under my hand, this 19th day of September 1912.

          Mr. J. Dallas Collier of this place tells me that my predecessor, Judge shivers, forwarded me is application for Confederate pension for your department more than one year ago and that he is heard nothing there from to this good day.

          The old man request me to ask you to look the matter up and let him know just what is the matter, if anything, with the said application

          please give the matter your usual prompt attention, and oblige.

I, J. M.  Collier do hereby certify that I am the person to whom is entrusted the paying of the accounts and indebtedness of the late J. D. Collier, who was a pensioner of the state of Texas, and whose file number was 21448 and whose original County was Tyler

          the said pensioner J. D. Collier, died on the 30th day of November 1935 in the town of Batson, Texas County of Hardin, Texas

          the pensioner died in the home of Mrs. J. M. Rogers, who is related to the pensioner as daughter.

          That the war, which application is hereby made for, shall be applied to paying all or part of the funeral expenses incurred by the said pensioner.

          I further certify that the war for the current month has not been cashed by the pensioner, to the best of my knowledge and belief.

          I'm related to the pensioner as son, them a post office address is 5711 Sherman Street, Houston, Texas

Appears on the company muster roll Likens' Battalion.  Rolled dated - Sabine pass, Texas November 24, 1861.

Muster in date - November 24, 1861 at Sabine Pass by Major Likins for 12 months.  No remarks.

 

Appears on a register of payments to discharged soldiers.  Date of discharge 18 June 1862.  Date of payment 6 November 1862.  Paid by B. W. Brown.  No other remarks.

 

Appears on regimental return for Spaight's Battalion as a private in Co. G. for the month of October 1864.  Remarks under “alterations since last return among the enlisted men” dated October 1, 1864 in Beaumont, remarks - gain by transfer from Daly's Battalion. (Note: I checked Daly’s Battalion records and could not find record of him – jpp 27 December 2007)

 

Appears as a musician on a muster roll for company K 21st Infantry Regiment for the month of December 1864.  Remarks: receiving instruction as a musician at camp Green.

 

Appears as the musician on muster roll for company K 21st infantry Regiment for the month of March 1865. Listed as sick since February 26, 1865 in General Hospital at Houston, Texas.

 

A letter is included in the national archives records dated July 9, 1951.

The letter is from William E. Bergen, Major General USA, acting the Adjutant General

The letter is to Mrs. N S. Carney 30th St, Los Angeles 7, California.

The records show a J.D. Collier, name not found as the James Dallas Collier, a private of Captain James G. Collier’s company, Likin’s Battalion Texas volunteers, which subsequently became company D., 11th (  Spaight’s) Battalion Texas volunteers, Confederate States Army, enlisted 24 November 1861, at Sabine pass, Texas.

          He was transferred to company G., 11th (Spaight’s) Battalion Texas volunteers which subsequently became company K., 21st Regiment Texas infantry, Confederate states Army.  His name appears on a regimental return of the organization for the month of March 1865, which shows him sick February 26, 1865.  General Hospital Houston, Texas.  Listed as a musician.  No later record of him has been found.

          This collection of records is by no means complete, and failure to find the entire record of Confederate military service does not indicate necessarily that an individual did not serve at some.  Not covered by the records.

          Enumerated with James G. Collier dwelling number 56.  James G. Collier was a 38-year-old male farmer with the value of real estate of $3000.  Living with Elizabeth W. Collier a 26-year-old female attended school within the last year.  Also living with Lucy Collier a 16-year-old female who attended school within the last year.  Also living with Charles B Collier a 13-year-old male, Eliza P. Collier three-year-old female, James H. Collier a five-year-old male, Sarah E. Collier a one year old female.

 

1860 census - schedule 1 - free inhabitants in_______ in the County of Tyler State of Texas enumerative by me, on the 12th day of July 1860.  Post office listed as Woodville. Page 36

                   E. W. Collier a 35-year-old female born in Georgia.

                   J.D. Collier a 15-year-old male, born in Georgia, attended school within the year.

                   E. J. Collier a 13-year-old female, born in Georgia attended school within the last year.

                   S. E. Collier 11-year-old female born in Georgia attended school within the last year.

                   M.  L. Collier a nine-year-old male born in Georgia attended school within the last year.

                   E. Collier a five-year-old female born in Texas attended schools in the last year.

                   S. Collier a three year old female born in Texas attended school within the last year.

                   J. A. Collier a two-year-old female born in Texas.
